This dram comes crashing out of the glass with all the power of a West Coast gale; soot, peat smoke, tar and seaweed all thunder out of the glass initially, before a little breathing time allows for the fruit notes from the meaty Oloroso sherry wood to shine out, with oranges, lemon, warm fig jam, beeswax and fruity tobacco. The palate is equally commanding, steering through peat smoked ash into dark chocolate and prunes, with baking spice lingering into the finish. A robust, invigorating dram best enjoyed al fresco in the horizontal rain of a fine West Coast summer’s day.
