Oban 1996 Prima & Ultima is a rare and distinguished 26 year old single malt that represents the quiet power and coastal elegance of Oban distillery. Selected as part of Diageo’s coveted Prima & Ultima series—a collection of the first and last casks of their kind—this 1996 vintage stands as a unique chapter in Oban’s story.
Matured for over two decades in refill American oak hogsheads and European oak butts, this whisky unveils a beautifully balanced character. On the nose, it opens with gentle sea spray, citrus zest, and soft oak spice, layered with hints of dried fruit and toasted barley. The palate is smooth and rich, carrying notes of honeycomb, orchard fruit, and a wisp of smoke, all wrapped in a delicate coastal salinity. The finish is long, warming, and subtly spiced—graceful and complex without overwhelming the senses.
With only a limited number of bottles drawn from this final batch of casks, Oban 1996 Prima & Ultima is a collector’s gem and a true celebration of the distillery’s nuanced maritime style
